What is SilverSneakers?

SilverSneakers is a wellness program designed for older adults. The program provides seniors with an innovative blend of education and physical activity aimed at letting you take charge of your health and maintain an active, independent lifestyle. The physical activity component of SilverSneakers features exercise classes that will help you improve your muscular strength, endurance, range of movement, flexibility, balance, agility and coordination.

Who sponsors SilverSneakers?

Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield is the primary sponsor of SilverSneakers in western Pennsylvania. LSS was selected by Highmark to administer the SilverSneakers program in select LSS Senior Centers in Allegheny, Butler and Beaver counties.

Who can join SilverSneakers?

Medicare-eligible seniors enrolled in one of the following Highmark insurance programs: Security Blue, Freedom Blue, or MediGap Blue.

How much does SilverSneakers cost?

There is no cost for seniors enroll in one of the Highmark insurance programs listed above.

What type of exercise will I be doing?

The SilverSneakers exercise classes are led by trained instructors. The exercises are designed to improve your muscular strength, endurance, range of movement, flexibility, balance, agility and coordination.

Can I join if I have a medical condition?

Yes, provided your doctor gives his/her permission with any special instructions regarding your exercise program.

How do I sign-up for SilverSneakers?

Contact the LSS Senior Center nearest to you (see SilverSneakers directory on this website) and ask for the SilverSneakers program. Our staff will assist you with enrollment.

What should I wear to my SilverSneakers class?

Loose, comfortable clothing and rubber-soled shoes are all you need. We also recommend bringing a water bottle with you. Your exercise leader will ask you to take small sips of water during the session.

What will I do if I can't keep up with the rest of the class?

Everyone exercises at their own pace. Our instructors will monitor your response to activity and adjust the routines to match your current level of fitness.
