Sodium Class is Made Sweet for Local Seniors

Laura Haddox is a nutrition student completing her practicum with Lutheran Service Society this spring. Laura is primarily working in the Meals On Wheels program to help measure program outcomes and improve nutrition for local seniors.

As part of National Nutrition Month Laura gave a nutrition class in the PrimeTime senior center on the new 2010 Dietary Guidelines' recommendation to reduce sodium in Americans' diets. Reducing sodium is of special importance in the senior population. Laura used a variety of posters and handouts to assist in her presentation. The topics covered were: the dietary recommendation for sodium, sources of sodium in the American diet, how to determine how much sodium is too much, and tips on reducing sodium in one's diet. Laura ended the session by answering questions and conducting a verbal quiz, rewarding participants with a prize for answering correctly. Many in the senior center were interested in the topic and asked a lot of questions.

Laura said, "[The senior center] was a very welcoming environment and made delivering the message all the easier. I hope to conduct other nutrition classes during my practicum here at Lutheran Service Society."

Thank you, Laura, for engaging seniors in this wellness topic, and for helping Lutheran Service Society to fulfill our mission to "empower our neighbors to lead independent, dignified, and secure lives."
